Successful Development in the Face of Drought

Aidlink and our local partner the Diocese of Lodwar have worked together in the drought affected region of Turkana, Northern Kenya, for over ten years. Our sustainable development work, focusing on climate adaptation, has allowed the Turkana people harvest their crops even though neighbouring regions are coping with one of the worst droughts in living memory.

Water Pans

One of the projects recently completed was the building of a water pan in Kang’alita in the central district of Turkana. Water pans are large man-made ponds which capture rain water and act as a reservoir. They are an incredibly simple yet effective means of increasing the water supply to an area. The Kang’alita pan measures 14,000m³ yet a single day of heavy rain is enough to fill the pan for 3 to 4 months.

The pan in Kang’alita has been a huge success for the people of the region despite the severe drought devastating much of the surrounding areas. This pan alone provides water to over 3000 people in the area and their approx. 70,000 livestock and this is the 18th pan we and the Diocese of Lodwar have constructed in the region over the past 5 years.

Impact

This water source has had an incredibly positive impact on the health of the people and animals in the community. The pan was strategically placed beside some pre-existing wet season gardens which are now producing crops thanks to the newly built irrigation systems running from the pan. This has increased the food security amongst the community of Kang’alita and has greatly mitigated the effects of the on going drought which has reached alarm phase in the region.

People are now able to access water, irrigate their lands and water their animals locally whereas prior to the excavation of this pan people in Kang’alita had to travel up to 20Kms to source water.
